Diesel

What he was trying to find at the bottom of a bottle he didn’t know. It certainly wasn’t his damn dignity. He hadn’t told the others yet. Hadn’t told Ares. He knew how he would take the news which was probably why he was drowning himself in booze. He hated lying to his family, but he couldn’t tell them Chris was a cop. Some of the guys wouldn’t take that very well and he just couldn’t risk… he couldn’t let them do something stupid.

His fingers tightened on the leather lying in his lap.

Someone slid onto the barstool next to his.

“Is this where you say you’re fine and I say you’re not, but I’ve got you?”

He turned his head and looked up at a too-fucking-smug looking Texas.

“No,” he said and brought the bottle to his lips and took a big gulp of beer.

“What happened?” Tex asked, sounding so damned genuine it made Diesel grind his teeth.

Lying wasn’t exactly new to him, but it got harder the more you loved the people you were lying to.

“Chris happened,” he muttered under his breath.

“Did he break up with you?”

He snapped his head up, staring at Texas with confusion.

“What?” Tex shrugged. “We all know you’ve been doing the horizontal mambo.”

“I thought it was tango?” Roadkill said, appearing behind Texas.

“What are you? Middle schoolers?” Griff asked with a shake of his head. “What Tex meant to say is that we all know you’ve been fucking, and no, I didn’t say anything. You two have just been giving off some major ‘we’ve been fucking’ vibes.”

“That,” Texas said with a nod. “But where even is he? He’s supposed to be here right now, isn’t he?”

“He’s gone,” Diesel said. He squeezed the leather once again before putting it up on the bar. It smelled as much of leather as it smelled of Chris’ cologne.

“Chris left us?” Jace asked.

He heard the surprise in Jace’s voice, and he could imagine the shock on everyone’s faces, but he was stuck staring at Chris’ cut. The promise Chris had made to the club before putting it on for the first time had been nothing but a lie.

A hand on his shoulder had him looking up. Ares was there, a sympathetic look in his eyes.

“I think we need to talk,” Ares said.

Diesel gave him a nod, then slid off his stool and followed Ares upstairs. They walked into Ares’ bedroom and the second the door was closed behind them, Ares rounded on him.

“Why the hell haven’t you told me he left? What happened? Is this part of why you’ve been all weird for a while?”

Diesel dropped his head forward with a sigh. He ran his fingers through his hair and when he looked up at Ares, he knew he needed to be honest with his friend.

“It is,” he answered.

Ares crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing. “What happened?”

He swallowed hard against the thick lump in his throat and sat down on the bed.

“I need you to promise that you’ll keep this between us,” he said, swallowing against the lump in his throat.
